Taking care of your Bonni

We have carefully selected the very best materials to craft our Bonnis and they are designed to look beautiful, stand up to the elements, and age gracefully. Maintaining your Bonni will enhance this process further and help it to stand the test of time.

Taking care of your…

Raw timber

We use solid oak and larch where we want to celebrate the natural qualities of the timber. Leaving it unpainted gives warmth and texture and allows your Bonni to blend with its environment. Naturally very strong and hard-wearing, timber ages gracefully and takes on a beautiful silvered patina over time. As your timber settles, some natural wood movement is to be expected. This is nothing to worry about and an intrinsic part of its character. We are confident in the quality of our timber that it can be left to do its own thing naturally. There isn’t any work for you do other than enjoy its changes.

Painted timber

If you have chosen to paint your timber, we recommend you apply a fresh coat of paint to your Bonni after it’s first year of settling in.  This will offer extra protection from UV rays and the harsh effects of the weather. Over time, you may need to retouch the painted finish or choose to repaint your Bonni altogether. The position of your Bonni and its exposure to the elements will help you to decide how often this is necessary in the future.

It’s best to paint timber when it is dry and there is no rain forecast for a few days. Spring is a great time and will have your Bonni looking its very best for the summer.

We will supply a pot of paint for touching up small areas in between these times.

Corrugated steel

We love corrugated steel for its durability. Your roofs and walls will always be galvanised or powder-coated making them heat, water, and rust-resistant. Over time it will lose some of its decorative and protective properties due to the nature of the weather; sun, rain, wind, salt water etc. The right type of care and maintenance is essential to combat these elements (unless you are like us and love the natural character of aging over time). We recommend using a soft cloth or a brush and a solution of mild soap and warm water. The best type of soap to use for this purpose is one that has emulsifiers that can break down any dirt. It is important not to use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning materials. Pressure washing is the most efficient method of cleaning to remove dirt and grime, use a low-pressure spray setting standing 1m away from the building.

Should you have accidental damage to your corrugated roof/walls we supply a can of touch up paint in your chosen colour for you to repair any chips and dents where necessary.

Ventilation

We provide a ventilation system to allow your Bonni to breathe all year round, letting the fresh air in and old air out. This natural form of airflow provides a comfortable and consistent temperature, reduces pollutants, condensation and unpleasant odours.  We advise keeping the vents open throughout the year, adding some gentle heating over the winter months to ensure moisture doesn’t build up. In the summer months leaving your doors and windows open will allow the air to circulate and keep your Bonni cool and fresh.

To keep your vents clear and free-flowing, regularly clean with a microfibre cloth and soft bristle brush. Maintain garden plants and shrubs to avoid any obstruction.

Caring for glass

To keep your glass clean and clear, follow the same steps we’ve recommended for your corrugated steel. A dry e-cloth for dusting and a damp one for cleaning will keep the glass looking its best. Avoid acidic cleaners and specialist glass cleaners.

 Oak flooring

Our timber flooring is made from high quality solid engineered oak. We have used Osmo oil as a topcoat to protect against discolouration, although variations in colour and grain are to be expected and the flooring will develop a natural patina over time.

Keeping oak flooring clean:

  • Vacuum with a brush attachment or sweep regularly to remove loose grit and dirt.

  • Clean with Osmo or any wood suitable surface soap or another pH neutral cleaner.

  • Keep mats by outdoor entrances to prevent dirt being brought in.

  • When moving furniture, pick it up and carry it rather than dragging it across the floor where possible.

Due to the high grade of oak we source and the Osmo oil it is perfectly safe for use in the Bonni shower room.

As well as following the above guidance, take extra care to dry up any spills as soon as possible to avoid the moisture seeping into the timber.

Oak worktops

Our oak worktops are crafted from the finest quality raw materials to offer durability combined with the natural beauty and character of solid oak. We have used Osmo oil as a topcoat to protect against discolouration and marking.

Keeping your worktop clean:

  • Clean with Osmo spray cleaner or any suitable surface soap or another pH neutral cleaner.

  • Wipe up any spills as soon as possible.

General guidance

  • Do not pull at loose threads. Instead, trim with scissors or poke it back through with a long pin.

  • Do not position any textile close to a fire or radiator. Direct sunlight will also cause the colour to fade over time.

  • Airborne pollutants like smoke and strong perfumes will cling to fabric. Regularly air the room to avoid this.

Rugs

Everyday care

  • Vacuum regularly without a brush attachment.

  • Spot clean marks and stains as soon as possible using a damp, colour-fast cloth.
